how to spot fake parts?

10 Replies, 7654 Views

i have been sorting my mountains of tomy BPT over the last week, and during the sort, closer inspection of parts has revealed quite a bit that was lacking the tomy logo. some are stamped made in china, others say thailand.

does every single geunine tomy piece say 'tomy" on it, or could it be logical quite a bit got missed? i am not just talking about tracks, but also the yellow girders/risers and the step risers as well. and its all types of tracks, from straights and curves to the A/B riser curves, stop tracks and points. even some half straights.

also, i found some track that didnt have the "lines" on the track, but more like a rough surface. some other had the lines, but very faintly done. both types are stamped as made in japan. i am keeping these for now, as i wonder if they are early plarail, like from the time of the push along range.

best find was a number of quarter length male/female adapters with tomy on one side and plarail on the other. i know they have been discussed here before, but its been a while since i have seen them Big Grin

As far as the surfaces go there is this BPT discussion where Jdog sows a picture of the different surfaces. https://www.blueplastictracks.com/showth...koff+track

I know we have talked about the knockoffs in the past and I vaguely remember that the Made in Japan ones could still be Tomy but maybe not the China and Thailand but I am not so sure. Hopefully a member with a better memory than I or information on this will help out.

You can also see in this Dumica Knockoff Thread that it has the A&B Riser Curves and yellow risers all non Tomy. https://www.blueplastictracks.com/showth...ght=Dumica

thanks super. so it seems the japan stuff is to be kept, but in a seperate container. i also have some thailand fakes with the same textured surface. so hard to know what to keep and what to donate/repurpose.

Like Muddy said it the Linked Thread, the vintage Tomy tracks that just have a rough surface aren't as good as the ones with the lines in it. Just not enough good traction. I got rid of all the rough surfaced Tomy's I had just because of that.

if its genuine, i cant bring myself to get rid of it, especially since getting the anniversary set with the replicas. will be good for display purposes.

I can appreciate that to keep a vintage set authentic. Come to think of it I probably have some of the first and second generation of Tomy tracks in some of the sets I have but haven't used.

There's quite a lot of genuine rolling stock that doesn't say Tomy on it.

For example, Plarail short wheelbase tankers & container flatbeds, Thomas tankers (Milk, Tar, Sodor Fuel etc.), short log wagons, short Japanese brake vans, short grey fish vans, and so on. These all just have either Thailand, Vietnam, or China on them.

i have made an interesting discovery in the attic of mystery. i have basically finished the BPT sorting, and have moved onto the vintage dark blue. will get photos tomorrow at some stage.

i wasnt going to bother looking at the dark blue at all, but curiousity got the better of me, to find many tracks stamped exactly the same as the "knock off" BPT.
my theory, since the dark blue wasnt really around for that long, the early molds werent trademarked. once they started adding the logo, they either stored or sold the original molds, and they were used to create the unbranded BPT.

i am not going to return the unbranded BPT to the attic, as i have so much and it simply isnt needed, but the unbranded dark tracks are staying.

I am loving your journey into the attic Sun.

I checked the few pieces of the dark blue track that I have and the curves I have just say Thailand on them, the straights say Tomy Thailand and one of those double length hill curves with the culvert opening in the middle and it has the trademarked Tomy Thailand on it so this is interesting.
