Japanese Trains on Webcam

7 Replies, 8979 Views

I found this live webcam yesterday while checking the Rugby World Cup / Typhoon Hagibis weather situation. As the caption says, it shows the Yurikamome 'monorail' (which isn't really a monorail, you could model this using Tomy road tracks), Tokaido Shinkansen (700 / N700 srs), Yamanote Line, Keihin Tohoku Line, Tokaido Line, Ueno Tokyo Line, etc.

I had five trains in view at once on this one a little while ago.

Here's another that I found this morning. This one shows the tracks at Sendai, which is about 350km north of Tokyo, and according to the caption carries E2, E3, E5 & E6 srs Shinkansen:

So it looks like the 'Monorail' is a single (mono) rail train at least as far as I can see...right? Are they electric and get their power from the rail or magnetic.

Wikipedia tells us that:

The Yurikamome is sometimes mistakenly called a monorail, but the trains run with rubber-tired wheels on elevated concrete track guided by the side walls.

Hence my suggestion that it could be modelled using Tomy road tracks.

So it looks like, from the picture, it gets its power from those side rails.

Now that I see this picture, Plarail has already made this in 2 versions quite some time ago. I will try to dig them up.

Here is a quick picture from one version that I have that was sold retail by itself. The other version was sold in a big set with a large station that also had road track. That version had a different number. I know I had a Thread involving these but I can't recall their name?

Found them...the other version was numbered 01

This is awesome! Watching this right now.

Been to Japan twice and trains there are awesome. Actually need to work on the photos on my blog then can share it with you guys!

Yurikamome indeed is a weird one. What's cool about it is that it's completely automated and there are no drivers! We stood right at the front of the train, and despite the rain it was great.

The proper monorail is the one taking you to Haneda airport and I took it last time. I may just create a post in general here with all the train pics I've managed to take during my trips.
