Relating to all items including those from Japan... BNIB or (Brand new in box) to me means it is in new condition but has been opened before at some stage. MISB (Mint in sealed box) to me means it has never been opened and the original seals are intact. These definitions are commonly accepted in the toy collecting world.

I have never heard of MISB before but then I am not in the collecting World. My view was always that if it Stated Brand New in Box (BNIB) that it was unopened and New In Box (NIB) was new but may have been opened. Trevor mentions shrink wrap, as far as I know Plarail never used it so if you do have one sealed like that it might send up a caution flag. Thats one of the draw backs from the Japan Auctions is not having that Buyer to Seller direct communication.

I used to be in the Vintage PC Game collecting and there, listings would state new in manufacturers sealed box, or manufacturers shrinkwrapped box. But then came the easily available shrinkwrap machines at businesses or at home and the fakers started to show up. My friend bought a particularly rare, valuable game listed new in manufacturers shrinkwrapped box and when he cut open the shrinkwrap and looked inside the CD case was wrapped in paper towel.

Yes MISB has begun to popup in listings, though many sellers still have not made the adjustment and still consider a BNIB to mean brand new never unopened, while some sellers who now ARE aware of the difference, are taking advantage of the discrepancy in listing descriptions.

I always equated the term "Mint" as being something not new or opened and that the contents or item, which are not new, are still in Mint condition. Furthermore, doesn't the word "Mint" in "MISB" only really refer to the box being Mint as the condition of the items inside the box would be unknown if it really was a manufacturers seal. Of course none of this means much as a seller can say whatever they want without repercussions except for bad Feedback or refund. But then if the seals are fake chances are that the buyer, who may be a collector, never opens the box to find that it isn't new or worse yet, there is nothing in the box.

Often it's hard to tell if they are factory sealed as the factory often just uses sellotape to seal like with Trackmaster etc. Lego and some other high end toy brands have specific security seals. I have also seen the term MIMSB

Hmmmm...I assume "Mint In Mint Sealed Box"? Hmmmm...how would one know that whats inside is mint unless they opened it? [Image: grin-smiley-emoticon.gif] The acronyms are limitless.... That is the endless dilemma Super, I am active in the Transformers toys community and some of those particular collectors are misb collectors only. I often wonder about hidden defective toys only opened years later when sold on haha.
