Traction Issues with Old Style Plarail James

19 Replies, 15621 Views

Yes, his wheels keep spinning on the curves and his traction tires are in pretty good condition, and centered properly on the wheels. I've given the AA battery trick a try and while he goes considerably faster, he still gets stuck. I'm not too keen to open him up given how rare the old style of Plarail James is but if you guys don't have any other ideas I might just have to give it a try.

A video would help us see what the cause could be.

This will be an easy fix Blue...those traction tires on James are in very worn out condition, no wonder he is slipping so much. They just need to be replaced. They are not very expensive to buy a set of new ones which I think come in packages of 8 sets and can be found on Amazon or Ebay.
BTW: Thats a nice YouTube Channel you have there. Are all those videos your creations?

Like Super said, the traction wheels are an easy fix and worth replacing if they’re old and worn.

There’s still a possibility that the gear on the drive axle is cracked and slipping. Also, several versions of James over the years have been very light in the nose and somewhat unbalanced. If there’s room, I would try adding weight in the front 1/3 of the engine. Two sources are the weights sold for model railroads and (possibility easier to find) those sold for Pinewood Derby racers.
