A dab of light weight oil should also help in reinstalling the side rods.

So I can more understand...Pick up the engine, and turn it on...when you touch the drive wheels with your finger, does it stop the wheels from turning even though you can hear the motor still working? With no battery in him and the switched turned on, can you roll him?

1. wheels stop and motor stops
2. no rolling

well that doesn't sound like a cracked gear at all so next try. Clean those slopes like with dish soap at warm water, rinse and dry well and try Gordon again.

one washing later, my slopes are now spic and span

He is still not running the way he should. I suspect that whoever repaired the wires forgot or lost the weights.  Maybe someone here can check as I don't have a Gordon but I am pretty sure that you should be able to look in the Cab windows and 2 rounded weights on each side. Without these weights the traction tires would have a hard time staying on the rails. When you look in those Cab windows do you see metal weight>

Well thats good. I think I am at a loss as to why since the motor looks really strong with it being able to spin like it does on the rail. My last thought would be missing weights in the front lower chassis over the axle. There are also some weights within the motor housing that may have been lost but you would have to get inside to check this theory out.
