A list of all non-japanese Plarail rolling stock

13 Replies, 1215 Views

This is something that I felt could be quite interesting. This thread intends to list every piece of Plarail rolling stock that is based on a locomotive outside of Japan.
If there are any items that I missed, please let me know. I'd be happy to add them. Locomotives are listed by country of origin.

Edit 1: Included some missing information found by members of this forum.
Edit 2: Added Trains from China, Thailand and Hong Kong.
Edit 3: Added the GM Aerotrain.

NOT INCLUDED:
Any thomas characters
Taiwanese locomotives, those can be found in this thread: https://www.blueplastictracks.org/thread-5143.html

France
  • TGV, Sud-Est livery
    Sold Seperately (Japan and UK)
Probably the most well known one. Was sold in Japan under the Plarail foreign series brand and in the UK under the Tomica World Brand.

  • TGV, Atlantique livery
  • Found in Tomica World set 7430, sold seperately as Tomica World 7561
  • Slightly different molding. MUCH harder to find.

United Kingdom
  • Virgin Express Train
  • Sold seperately as Tomica World 7465
  • Unlike the Eurostar and the TGV, this is a repaint of the Kintetsu 21000 Urban Liner and not an original mold. The design is meant to resemble the InterCity 125/Class 43, in a Virgin livery.

  • Eurostar
  • Sold seperately (Japan and UK)
  • The train that runs through the underwater tunnel between France and Britain. Like the TGV Sud-Est, this was sold in Japan
under the Plarail foreign series brand and in the UK under the Tomica World Brand.

United States
  • EMD F7
  • Sold in Tomica World set 8296, 7413, Tomy Trains Super Deluxe City Railway set
  • Not entirely sure if the Basis is correct. Always came with 2 passenger coaches. Locomotive from set 8296 (Same as Thomas Medium Set) is blue with beige stripes, the one from set 7413 had an Amtrak livery. Strangely, the livery is NOT the one that Amtrak used for their F7's, but instead is based on an F40PH livery. An image of a F40PH can also be seen on the box for this set. The last one from the Tomy Trains set has a generic red livery with white stripes.

  • Sold seperately
  • Looks to be a GE Evolution series type of locomotive. In a Jurassic World livery. Comes with a container car and a special long type freight car made for holding dinosaurs.

  • Let's carry Tomica! Set
  • Sold seperately
  • Locomotive uses same mold as the Jurassic World one, just with a generic blue and black livery with white stripes.

  • JGR 7100 Series

  • This was an american built locomotive that ran in Japan. A modern version of this loco was also released by plarail a few years ago.

Looks to be more of a generic American steam train design rather than having a proper basis. Who knows, maybe it is and I just don't know...

Good work, Tyler.

The basis for this and other similar old Plarail puffers is the Japanese Government Railways (JGR) 7100 series, Benkei and Yoshitsune included. They were built by H.K. Porter of Pittsburgh USA.

My thread covering Taiwanese releases needs updating, there's been another Metro train released since I wrote it, possibly others, I need to check.

You need to look at Thailand, Hong Kong and the Republic of China for other examples of Plarails based on non-Japanese trains. I'll leave that to you.

The so-called Virgin Train (the diesel-powered Intercity 125) is curious in that it's just a repaint of a Japanese train (the overhead electric-powered Kintetsu 21000 Urban Liner), and bears almost no resemblance to the real thing, apart from its colour and logo.

The Tomica World silver TGV was also released in its own box, 7561, as well as part of the set that you've shown, and it is NOT the same mould as the orange one.

If you want any help, PM me. Always willing to encourage a fellow researcher.

Hello Chris,
Thank you for the help! I'll be sure to update my post with this info. I personally haven't seen any Plarail locomotives based on Hong Kong/Chinese designs, so I would greatly appreciate it if you could show me where I could find out more about those.  Big Grin

I am not sure I have seen that Vibrant Express MTR380A before...thanks JT 👍
The picture reminds me of the Type JR 500 mold.

Hi Leyland 😃

It's funny you say you haven't seen the vibrant express before, since chrisjo sent me this thread https://www.blueplastictracks.org/thread-5105.html of you talking about the set to help with research.  Big Grin

Also, the design reminded me more of the FASTECH 360, which was an experimental shinkansen which later became the basis for the E5.
